John Kinell
John Kinell, lyrisk baryton, etablerade sig tidigt som en lovande
romanssångare med sin varma klang och musikaliska intelligens. Bland annat
gjorde han en sverigeturné i Rikskonserters regi i början av 2006 och han
har framträtt på t.ex. Båstad Kammarmusikfestival och runt om hos Sveriges
kammarmusikarrangörer. Sedan hans examen från Operahögskolan i Stockholm
våren 2009 har han dessutom hunnit framträda på operascener på Åland, i
Göteborg och nu senast i Värmlandsoperans uppsättning av Rigoletto, och man
har kunnat se honom på SVT i Hotell Opera som först sändes i juni 2009.
Han är ofta anlitad som solist i oratorier och har framträtt med orkestrar
som t.ex. Sveriges Radios symfoniorkester, Göteborgs symfoniker och
Dalasinfoniettan. Tillsammans med pianisten Jonas Olsson vann han år 2003
andrapris i Pentti Koskimies Lied competition och deras samarbete har
fortsatt sedan dess. 2004 vann han andrapris i Ljunggrenska tävlingen och
samma år blev han Christina Nilsson-stipendiat och Ordet och Tonens
Lanseringsstipendiat.

Have you been to Koster earlier? If yes: What’s your greatest memory? If no: What have you heard about the festival?
My greatest memory from Koster was performing at the festival in 2006. I was singing a great programme with music by Grieg, Wolf, Poulenc and, to top it off, the original, longer version of Schumann’s Dichterliebe. When the concert started we only had one paying person in the audience. That could have been a disaster for our moral, but instead we decided to give that person the best concert we possibly could, and for me it is still one of the best performances I’ve given.What would you never play on your instrument?
Rap. Not because I don’t like it, but I don’t have a good flow.What’s your worst ever memory from a gig?
Singing Dichterliebe with a wasp hovering in front of my face. I am quite scared of wasps, and this one was right in my face during one of the slower songs. It’s kind of hard hanging on to your concentration while trying not to inhale too quickly and swallow a wasp…
